What Is Three Phase Power?
Most homes are supplied with single-phase power. A single-phase connection generally uses one active conductor to deliver electricity to the property.
A three-phase connection uses three active conductors, allowing electrical loads to be distributed across three separate phases. This can provide greater capacity and allow compatible three-phase machinery, motors, chargers and commercial equipment to operate.
Three-phase power does not automatically make every appliance cheaper to run. Its main advantages are increased available capacity, improved load distribution and the ability to operate equipment designed specifically for three-phase electricity.
When Should You Consider a Three Phase Power Upgrade?
A single-phase to three-phase upgrade may be worth considering when your current electricity supply cannot safely support the equipment you plan to install.
Common reasons for upgrading include:
- Installing a 22kW three-phase EV charger
- Operating welders, compressors, pumps, lathes or workshop machinery
- Installing commercial kitchen appliances
- Connecting manufacturing or industrial equipment
- Installing larger ducted air-conditioning systems

- Completing a major home renovation or all-electric conversion

A dedicated 22kW EV charger is one clear example of equipment that uses a three-phase connection. However, many lower-capacity home EV chargers can operate on single-phase power, depending on the charger, property supply and Energex connection requirements.
Does Every All-Electric Home Need Three Phase Power?
No. Installing an induction cooktop, electric hot water system, air conditioner, solar panels or EV charger does not automatically mean your home needs three-phase power.
Many modern residential appliances are designed to operate on a standard single-phase supply. What matters is the combined electrical demand of the property, the capacity of the consumer mains and the condition and configuration of the switchboard.
Depending on the assessment, a more suitable solution may be:
- Installing a dedicated circuit for the new appliance
- Upgrading the switchboard
- Increasing the capacity of the existing single-phase supply
- Using an appropriately managed EV charger
- Selecting equipment compatible with the available supply
- Managing when high-demand appliances operate
- Using an approved dynamic solar or battery connection

What Is Involved in a Three Phase Power Upgrade?
Every property is different, but a single-phase to three-phase upgrade will generally involve several stages.
1. Property and Load Assessment
We assess your existing supply, switchboard, consumer mains and the electrical equipment you plan to operate.
This helps determine your expected maximum demand and whether three-phase power is the most appropriate solution.
2. Network and Connection Requirements
The availability and capacity of the electricity network must be considered. Changes to an existing Energex connection require a Connect Application and an accepted Connection Offer before the connection change can proceed.
The customer may submit the application, or an electrical contractor can submit it on the customer’s behalf.
3. Switchboard and Meter Panel Assessment
Your existing switchboard and meter enclosure may need to be modified or replaced to accommodate the new three-phase supply.

4. Consumer Mains and Cabling
The cabling between the point of supply, meter and switchboard may need to be replaced or upgraded.
The scope will depend on factors such as:
- Overhead or underground electricity supply
- Distance between the connection point and switchboard
- Existing cable capacity
- Meter box condition
- Property access
- Network requirements
- Planned electrical load
5. Electrical Work Request and Metering
Once the electrical installation is ready, the electrical contractor submits an Electrical Work Request.
The electricity retailer may then arrange metering work and advise the customer of relevant metering or connection charges. Energex requires the necessary paperwork, service orders and accepted charges before completing its part of the connection change.
6. Testing and Compliance
After the work is completed, the affected electrical installation is tested. Queensland electrical contractors must provide customers with the appropriate certificate of testing and compliance following electrical installation work.
